PAKISTANI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION & BROOKLYN KITES PRESENT 11th ANNUAL JASHAN-E-BAHARAAN : The Festival Colors Of Kites! Basant is a part of Asian Heritage Month being hosted by P.S.A! What is Basant? Jashan-e-Baharaan also referred to as Basant is a pre-Islamic Punjabi festival that marks the coming of spring. Celebrations in Pakistan are centered in Lahore and people from all over the country and abroad come to the city for the annual festivities. Kite flying competitions take place all over the city's rooftops during Basant. The fertile province of Punjab was intimately tied via its agriculture to the different seasons of the year. The arrival of Spring was an important event for all farmers and was welcomed with a celebration, hence the origins of Jashn (celebration) Baharan (spring) Basant is a seasonal festival celebrated at the end of winter to welcome spring. "Kite flying" is the major and most colorful event of this festival. The sky is covered with colorful kites that are of medium size normally from 1 foot to 4 feet in diameter; kites are usually made of paper and made especially for this purpose. Kites are of different shapes and sizes and are tied with specially made thread called "Doore." Special arrangements have been made this year to get customized kites for the event from Pakistan. "Yellow" is the color of the festival and is visible everywhere i.e. from kites to clothes. Basant is not only a kite flying event, it's a cultural festival for the entire family.

The last Ten years, I celebrate basant by going back home to Pakistan. I enjoyed it very much. Nowadays, we have created the flying club. Lots of people get together and fly kites.

The procedure is quite different in New York. Here we have to abide by the rules of law. Firstly, we cannot fly kites in our backyards or roof tops. The city allow us to fly kites but only in designated areas.

Slowly and steadily, people are coming out to enjoy kite flying. Firstly, there were no shops in New York where one would buy kites. Nowadays, the kites are readily available from any desi online store or www.Pakiatanikite.com.
